Safeguarding Adults
The Safeguarding Team plays a central role in ensuring that those that we support are kept free from abuse and neglect. The team has the responsibility for triaging all adult safeguarding concerns that Haringey adult social services receive and ensuring timely decisions are made and that residents are protected. They also hold the responsibility for management of Deprivation of Liberty (DoLS) cases that are referred into adult services.
Functions of the team include:
- Triage all safeguarding adult referrals and make decisions on what action needs to be taken and by who;
- Undertake all safeguarding enquiries where there is not a named social care practitioner currently involved in the case;
- Provide safeguarding adults strategic and operational advice across the partnership;
- Support & promote the development of Safeguarding Adults practice across the partnership.
Support is also provided to the other teams within adult social services with safeguarding enquiries, offering specialist advice and support when needed. They work with all partner agencies to support safeguarding enquiries, helping to identify who is the lead agency and ensure that Haringey's safeguarding duties under the Care Act are met.
Use the links below to access sections of the Care Act 2014 resource for information about the legal requirements of all safeguarding under the Act.

Haringey has adopted the Pan – London Safeguarding Adults Policy and Procedure. This sets out specifically how the Local Authority works with other organisations in the area, such as the police and the ICB to fulfil the requirements of the Care Act, including how they:
- Prevent and protect adults at risk from abuse;
- Empower and support adults to make their own choices;
- Investigate actual (or suspected) abuse or neglect; and
- Support adults who are at risk of, or experiencing abuse or neglect.
The Pan-London Policy and Procedures set out a four stage process for handling safeguarding enquiries. The stages are:
- Stage 1: Concerns;
- Stage 2: Enquiry;
- Stage 3: Safeguarding Plan and Review;
- Stage 4: Closing the Enquiry.
See: London Multi-Agency Adult Safeguarding Policy and Procedures.
The Haringey Adults Safeguarding Practitioner Manual contains a range of guidance for implementing the PAN – London procedures in Haringey.
It can be found in the Practitioner Manuals and Policies section of the Local Resources area.
In line with the Care Act 2014, Haringey has a Safeguarding Adults Board (SAB).
See the Safeguarding Adults Board section of The Care Act 2014 and find out more about:
- The aim of Safeguarding Adults Boards;
- Their role and statutory duties;
